MT STATE REP ZOOEY ZEPHYR
"...Despite all the cruelties, I believe people saw a glimpse of what our country can be if we stand up for democracy and for one another." Zooey Zephyr
WHAT HAPPENED
April 18th
Rep. Zooey Zephyr speaks up in support of gender-affirming healthcare for Trans youth on the Montana House Floor:
"If you are denying gender-affirming care and forcing a trans child to go through puberty, that is tantamount to torture, and this body should be ashamed. If you vote yes on this bill, I hope the next time you bow your heads in prayer, you see the blood on your hands."
April 19th
Montana's Republican Freedom Caucus calls for Rep. Zooey Zephyr's censure. Yes, you're reading that right - a "Freedom" group goes out of their way to limit an elected Representative's freedom.
April 20th
The Montana Republican Party refuses Rep. Zephyr to speak on any bill on this day and for the remainder of the 2023 legislative session. "This is fundamentally undemocratic", she tweets, "My light is on, and I am ready to speak on behalf of the constituents who elected me to do so."
The Missoula County Democrats and Montana American Indian Caucus issue statements in support of Rep. Zephyr, among others.
On April 21st, Rep. Zooey Zephyr is again disallowed from speaking on the Montana House floor for the second day in a row.
April 24th
3,200-name petition is turned into House Speaker Regier to "Let Zooey Speak". Meanwhile, Montana citizens are being arrested and Rep. Zephyr steps off the House floor in solidarity with them.
April 26th
Montana State Representative Zooey Zephyr, HD100, is removed from the House floor for the remainder of the legislative session.
The next day, April 27th, the work continues for Rep. Zephyr - from the public seating of the Montana House - and there were apparently attempts to have her removed from that public area too.
April 28th
From Rep. Zephyr on Twitter (@ZoAndBehold): "Republicans used a series of procedures to remove every bill from my committees, silencing my constituents beyond what they already voted to do. My constituents elected me to speak on their behalf—in committee & on the floor—and stopping me from doing so is anti-democratic."
A now-former Montana House Judiciary Clerk quits her job to join Zooey Zephyr's team as a staff member.
A rally in Missoula with Rep. Zephyr inspires tremendous hope - and a Q & A / meet-and-greet session follows on April 30th.
May 1st, 2nd
May 1st: As described by Rep. Zephyr, the MT GOP's actions violated her 1st Amendment rights - and the rights of her 11,000-strong constituency - prompting her to sue.
May 2nd: Rep. Zephyr responds to a judge's decision to NOT issue a Temporary Restraining Order, calling it "a dangerous and undemocratic continuation of that trend, as it undermines the very principles that our country was founded on" in a May 2nd, 2023 press release.
May 3rd
The Montana House 68th Legislative session adjourns. Rep. Zephyr signs her name on her desk, Seat 31, in line with Montana State Representatives' tradition. She departs for Missoula to "root myself in the community I love so much", and to prepare for meetings with leaders across Montana and the country.

I was elected to represent my 11,000 constituents. No silencing tactics will deter me from advocating for my community, my district, and all Montanans.

Some lovely friends saved me a spot on the bench outside the House antechamber, so seat 31 is back to its original home-away-from-home.

I served in the Montana legislature for years, working with everyone to get things done for Montana. Let’s be clear: banning a duly-elected representative is an extreme, undemocratic step that harms the thousands of Montanans who no longer have a voice in their government. pic.twitter.com/f6ZDELlERe

There are SO many ways to do it. Protests & direct action, building community engagement, working to elect folks.
Some may feel more right for you than others and that's okay. We're all different, even when we have the same goals.
Also thank you to everyone who sent flowers.

While the GOP's undemocratic censure kept me from my seat in the House for the last week of the session, your love & support filled that room—and for that I am so incredibly grateful. pic.twitter.com/NuqDX3FAuw
Some folks showed up early this morning and sat on the public benches near the entrance to the House, so Seat 31 has moved.

Still, the motion to censure her passes on a party line vote. This is a huge mistake.
